Meeting – November 2018

October 3rd, 2018 by JCope

Our next meeting at St Saviour’s Church Hall is on Tuesday 6th November at 8.00pm when we will have a presentation by Max Keen entitled “Sir Francis Drake: England’s Greatest Naval Hero?”.

Max Keen will need no introduction to members as he has been a regular and much enjoyed speaker at the society for a number of years. I expect we can all think back to our school days to what we remember about Sir Francis Drake. He was the English admiral who circumnavigated the globe from 1577-1580, helped defeat the Spanish Armada of 1588 and was probably the most renowned seaman of the Elizabethan era. While he is well known as the scourge of the Spanish who nicknamed him “El Draque” or the Dragon, it is probably less well known is that he was one of the first British slave traders.

I did notice a “?” at the end of the title so I expect there is bound to be a twist to the story we all know. What I think you can expect is a very entertaining and flamboyant presentation as Max usually comes “dressed in character”.

All welcome. Visitors £2 (including refreshments). See hhfs.org.uk.
