Meeting – October 2018

September 9th, 2018 by JCope

Our next meeting at St Saviour’s Church Hall is on Tuesday 2nd October at 8.00pm when we will have a very short Annual General Meeting followed by a presentation by Jo Roche entitled “Pioneers in Petticoats – The Early History of Kidderminster High School for Girls”.

Kidderminster High School opened on the Chester Road South site in 1912 and ceased to exist as a separate entity in July 1977 when it was amalgamated with King Charles 1st School and Queen Elizabeth 1st Grammar School (Hartlebury), becoming a comprehensive school.

This is a story of two second cousins, Miss Catherine Bennett and Miss Elizabeth Frances Ridley and their contribution to education for girls in Kidderminster. It was in an era when academic education had to be paid for. For girls, this was regarded as unfitting and unnecessary and only intended to provide a social education in preparation for marriage. All this was about to change.

Visitors are most welcome at all our events – see Home page for details and contacts.
