Meeting – 1st January 2019

December 27th, 2018 by JCope

Please make careful note that despite being a Bank Holiday, our next meeting at St Saviour’s Church Hall is on Tuesday 1st January 2019 at 8.00pm when we will have a presentation by Dr Terry Daniels entitled “Made in Oldbury: Industrial History Based on Ten Objects”. Terry has spent all his working life in the plastics industry in Oldbury. He is chair of Langley Local History Society and Oldbury Local History Group. Writing and lecturing on the history of the area, he has produced a number of books.

It is interesting to speculate on which ten objects he will choose, as people remember Oldbury in many different ways. In 1981, John D. Williams in “Memories from the Black Country” said, “As one entered Oldbury the smell of the tar works on the left was not unpleasant. It was said that a good cure for children with whooping cough was to hold them over the hot pitch and let them inhale the gases.” They were tough in those days!

Visitors are most welcome at all our events – see hhfs.org.uk for details and contacts.
