Meeting – 3rd September 2019

July 3rd, 2019 by JCope

Our next meeting at St Saviour’s Church Hall is on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 at 8.00pm when we will have a presentation by Dr Gillian White on The Great Fire of Warwick.

The town of Warwick is famous for its castle, but the rebuilding of the town also had an important impact on the history of town planning.

Dr White offers a lively and entertaining account of the events on a September afternoon in 1694, when much of the centre of Warwick was devastated by a great fire in just six hours. In the immediate aftermath the town’s leaders gathered to aid the citizens who had lost everything and then, as the urgent crisis passed, rebuilt Warwick to be one of the most modern and elegant towns in the Midlands. This talk tells the story of the fire and rebuilding of the town, which specified design rules for the new buildings and a new street design for the town which we can still appreciate when visiting today. Some of the most impressive post-fire buildings still standing in the town are featured.
