{"id":1261,"date":"2009-01-09T16:46:49","date_gmt":"2009-01-09T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hhfs.org.uk\/hhfs\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2013-05-16T21:26:22","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T20:26:22","slug":"news-letter-9th-january-2009-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hhfs.org.uk\/hhfs\/?p=1261","title":{"rendered":"Newsletter &#8211; January 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those who braved the weather to attend the Society\u2019s January meeting were well rewarded for their efforts.\u00a0 Following Chairman Ray Porter\u2019s welcome, we were treated to three superb presentations from members of the Society\u2019s Research Group.<\/p>\n<p>Setting the scene was Irene Oliver, who told us something of the origins and activities of the Group.\u00a0 Started in 1990, its members were recruited from those with an interest and who were prepared to get their hands dirty!\u00a0 Profits from the sales of publications had funded further projects and Irene brought examples of many of the papers and booklets produced by the Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don Freeth then talked about one of the Group\u2019s projects that had focussed on the names on the Hagley war memorial.\u00a0 From World War 1 we learned about the Gough brothers who had joined the Worcestershire Regiment on the same day and who died within six months of each other in 1918.\u00a0 Don\u2019s next account was of the Goodwin brothers who had joined the RAF and who both lost their lives in 1940.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Group\u2019s founder, Tom Pagett gave a detailed insight into Bell Hall Chapel.\u00a0 Tom explained some of the history of this building which had been started in around 1130.\u00a0 Using detailed photographs, we learned not only what had happened to the building over the centuries but how the archaeologists had come to their conclusions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those who braved the weather to attend the Society\u2019s January meeting were well rewarded for their efforts.\u00a0 Following Chairman Ray Porter\u2019s welcome, we were treated to three superb presentations from members of the Society\u2019s Research Group.
