6, 8 and 10 Birmingham Road

The first change of no. 6 Bromsgrove Road from being a residence into a business came in 1939 when Lilian and Peggy Garfield started Peggy’s Pantry there. It was also known as The Café. Mrs Abbiss, from about 1945 ran a sweet shop in no. 6 until 1948. Donald and Rosemary Stokes then changed it into a grocery shop and later added toys to their range of goods. They left the premises in about 1959.

Next, Harold Newman bought both no. 6 and no. 8, and altered the building so that 6 and 8 became one in order to establish his grocery and newspaper business. This advertisement was in the 1964 brochure circulated to all residents which appealed for funds to build the proposed community centre.

Earlier, the post office was at 20 Bromsgrove Road but in about 1976 Barry and Sylvia Watts were running it from what was previously Harold Newman’s shop.

This was their advertisement in the Hagley Village News of April 1978.

Barry and Sylvia ran the business until Ronald and June Humphries took it over in about 1978.

In 1979 John and Joyce Jeacock bought 6-8 Birmingham Road and began a long career of serving the people of Hagley until they retired in May 2016.

This was their first advertisement in the Hagley Village news of April 1980.

In April 1982 their Hagley Village News advertisement showed that a selection of cards and gifts had been added to their range of goods for sale.

Hagley Village News in December 1994 showed the extensive range of goods and services available to customers.

The shop was already a Post Office, general store, newsagents and tobacconists when they bought it but John and Joyce had no previous experience of being shopkeepers so Evelyn Cole helped out in the post office and Julie, the daughter of Ron and June Humphries, assisted with their learning to run the shop. They then dedicated themselves to meeting customers’ needs; the shop was open from 06.00 to 18.00 on 7 days each week (it was closed on Christmas day only). Both groceries and newspapers were delivered to customers.

The Post Office closed branches in 2005 which caused this one to close and Hagley changed to having its only post office in Worcester Road, West Hagley. However, the Jeacocks now added an off-licence to 6/8 Birmingham Roadwhich was open until 19.00. For their retirement the business was wound down and having earlier bought 10 Birmingham Road, they sold  6/8/10  Birmingham Road was to John Poulton, a security systems and electrical contractor.

10 Birmingham Road – Hairdressing Salons

Emily and Howard Aston moved into 10 Birmingham Road in about 1954. By 1961 she was using the name “Emmeline” which was also the name of her hairdressing salon at that address. Emily had retired before 1979 and let the shop which, over time, became a succession of different hairdressing businesses.

Hagley Village News of April 1983 had this advertisement for Hairlines.

Hairlines was advertising until March 1986 in the Hagley Village news.

Hagley Village News of August 1988 showed two further changes in the business; Hairlines had become “In Trim” which in turn had become ”Touch of Class”

In December 1991 the business became “Ribbons”.

Later came “Reds of Hagley Hair and Beauty” which closed on 29th March 2022.
