Newsletter – December 2012

December 26th, 2012 by JCope

Those attending the Society’s December meeting had a fabulous evening thanks to the return of Paul Harding and Helen Lee from Worcester-based Discover History.  Instead of the usual projected images, Paul used a series of artefacts to tell the tale of “A Medieval Christmas” in his usual mix of in-depth knowledge and humour.  Firstly he dispelled many of the Hollywood myths concerning the etiquette of the period: it was far more civilised than we had been led to believe.  We then learned about the type of food eaten (spread over an average of 26 courses!), the decorations and some of the traditions and sayings which still persist to this day (umble pie sounded a bit grim).  Paul is a skilful presenter and had the audience is pleats of laughter for much of the evening; an evening which was rounded off by the consumption of some seasonal fare (although not to Medieval standards!).

Recently uploaded to the website (www.hhfs.org.uk) is a section on the history of societies and organisations in the village – just follow ‘Local History’.  2013 marks the 50th birthday of the Society and a series of special events will be held throughout the year to mark this milestone: details will be published on the website.
