Newsletter – February 2011

February 9th, 2011 by JCope

February’s was one of the best attended meetings in recent years; little wonder, given that John Hemingway, the Dudley Borough Archaeologist, was talking about history literally on our doorstep.  The major earthworks involved in creating the playing fields at Trehern’s Farm had provided a unique opportunity to piece together some of the history and prehistory of the area John called ‘The Pass of Pedmore’.  We started with the glacial stones of the Triassic desert of 240 million years ago, before moving through prehistoric flint tools, Bronze Age pottery, Iron Age stake holes and finally Romano-British pottery.  What treasures beneath our feet – absolutely fascinating and skilfully interpreted for us by John.  What else might be found under Hagley lawns and vegetable patches?

Members of the Society have been busy developing a web site, the Research Group is preparing for its 21st Birthday (with accompanying book) later this year, we will be visiting Avoncroft on 14th April and in May we hold our social evening with cheese and wine.  All this, together with the popular monthly historical walks, means that members have plenty to keep them interested.
